Transtlate The Research Center for Chinese Science Evaluation (RCCSE), located in Wuhan University, Hubei Province issued the 2010 ranking list of Chinese universities Monday.
Released annually since 2004, the ranking includes 201 sub lists such as the Top 30 Most Competitive Universities in China, the Top 10 Most Competitive Private Colleges and the Top 20 Most Innovative Universities.
However, as expected none attracted more attention that the overall Top 20 Universities ranking.
Compared with last year, all the same universities hang on with the exception of Tianjin University dropping out and Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics entering the list.
There were also changes in the standings; the most notable Shanghai Jiao Tong University dropping 2 places to number 7.
"Our evaluation process is based on four factors," explained Qiu Junping, the director of the RCCSE.
"Resources available, teaching quality, research level and reputation," he said.
"Our data is compiled from reports released by the Ministry of Education, National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Science and Technology. We do not use data provided by universities as to maintain the integrity of the ranking," Qiu said.
Although Qiu is confident with the center's evaluation, the list aroused controversy among college students as to its fairness and validity as soon as it was released.
"Different rankings come out every year, but I never take any of them too seriously," said Hou Weiyu, a junior at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, a school down from number 10 to 12 in the ranking this year.
"But if these rankings are done fairly and authoritative enough, they could really push the universities to better improve themselves," Hou added.
